Beautiful beach serendipity

I ate breakfast recently in Wheeler, Oregon at Rising Star Cafe , only to realize that they do not take anything but cash for payment. The table next to me was informed of the same, and the gentleman got up to look for an ATM at the same moment, so we were off together in search. In the short time that it took to reach our destination, retrieve some money and head back to the restaurant we had shared much of our life story, however condensed. I knew that he was building a home in Manzanita with his wife, on a lot that he had owned for years, I knew that he was doing it with as much energy conservation and LEED ideas implemented and I knew that I must see if I could wrangle a visit/walkthrough with them. Fortunately, all of this lined up quite well and by the afternoon I was having the sort of tour that was even better than I imagined. The couple were both intelligent, warm and engaging. They were so excited about their new home and it was infectious. I offered to do all of the interior color as I believed that the Benjamin Moore Aura collection called Affinity, would be quite suitable for health reasons/LEED also, – low to no VOC, and the color palette is gorgeous, all of the colors are designed to work together. I left them with a color sample card of the entire variety of options, and all communication + color consultation, has been accomplished now via email. I must give credit to the homeowners for choosing most of the colors, which I then tweaked as needed. They have great taste! I have been honored to be awarded with what (I think) will be a long friendship in the future, and their home is turning out to be very pretty.

When asked to update a living room for a family, with a request that the look would lean towards their love of comfort and ease above all else, and requesting that a budget be kept in mind, I suggested West Elm and Ikea pieces and accents. The biggest splurge being the new leather Dania sofa, they were able to keep to the costs down and the results are the relaxed lifestyle that they craved, with updated neutrals.

West Elm rug, Ikea side tables and lamps, Ikea window treatments, repurposed favorite chair of the homeowner and new Ikea throw pillows.

Black House amazingness

When I met with my client to help her choose new exterior house color, I immediately saw in my mind what it should look like. Black, sleek, sophisticated – a new take on how to modernize a cedar shake 1920′s bungalow. She got it, completely knew that it would work and that it would rock her home. The replacement of her front door and new brushed stainless mail slot were the perfect finishing touch.

Re-Design of a home for a developer

While I do not have any before pictures of the interior, the exterior shot shows how much wear this house had suffered from. It has been dramatically transformed to a great rental for the developer / investor.

I met Julie Pointer at a YU Contemporary founders dinner, while she was there observing the art of the table and assisting John Taboada from Navarre with the preparation of the food and serving. The table, in my opinion, is roughly translated in how people come together to break bread, and the ways in which magic can happen when meals are shared and when one least expects it.

She has been attending a 2-year joint MFA program between PNCA and OCAC, called Applied Craft and Design.

The program focuses particularly on merging craft/design solutions with relevant social and environmental issues, and has an entrepreneurial push to it.

Julie has been observing time, place and environment, recently completing the massive undertaking of providing an artistic backdrop, along with table settings and pot luck assignments, for an outdoor meal. Gifting this, her thesis, to her direct neighbors and community where she lives in SE Portland, she created what I believe is so desired by many, that of creating relationships around sharing food together. I have been following her blog for awhile now, and am always amazed at her perception of beauty in the natural environment, the simplicity in which she weaves items together to create a whole new world for this one event. Whether through the invitations lovingly prepared or to the thought in which she chose the dinnerware, and brought together perfect strangers for a captivating event on May Day. She is someone to watch. The inspiration pages that she created as a backdrop for where she was headed with the final project are something that seems to have come from my dreams, I love the way her eyes and design sense capture exactly what I think is quite exquisite and complete to me.

YU Contemporary Art Center

YU hosted it’s first dinner for founding members yesterday evening. The meal was prepared by Navarre’s chef/owner John Taboada, with wine provided by Carlton Cellars and Martelo winery. The history of contemporary art in Portland for the last 30-40 years was distinctly represented around the table by Mary Beebe, Mel Katz and Jay Backstrand from PCVA 1972-1987. I was struck most by the intrinsic marriage that I feel must take place between the old guard and the new, with Portland sorely lacking in a contemporary arts facility and home. YU has the capability to become larger than anyone can conceptualize at this point of it’s early inception. The promise is high and I believe that it will be met.

I wanted to recommend attendance to this event this evening.
