Its been a productive and fast paced spring at the bungalow on Mt. Tabor.
Siding is on, drywall is up and getting finished, wiring is temped in. Now, it is all gearing up for the finishing touches! Paint, fixtures, cabinetry, tile and more.
We took a quick stop-in to check out the job site yesterday. During the walk through, we kept marveling at the beauty and change that we saw throughout. Here are a couple of before and after snaps. Transformation abounds.

Lately, we have realized that we are always on the go. Client meeting, site visits, sourcing trips, the list goes on. It can be difficult to sit down and write a blog post. While social media can be distracting in the workplace, it can also be a wonderful tool. Recently we did a whole 10 hour series called “Day in the Life”.

This is a project that has been born of love and labor.
A commercial real estate transaction I managed for a client then transformed into a design consulting job. The space, a former grocers-turned-upholstery shop is getting a new use as a workshop for vintage poster restoration. Structural work, mechanical, as well as finishes and design all had to be thought out. The owner/client has a good aesthetic and knew the general direction in which he wanted the building to go. SBaird Design was hired to help refine ideas, give lighting advice and consulting on finishes and space planning.
The project is almost complete. Here are some images from our site visits with the client.
Visit in the beginning of June:
care was taken to preserve the original terrazzo inlay. the number 1073 was the building’s historic address.
when the ceiling was removed, care was taken to preserve the original roof structure. the decision was made to keep the wood exposed and have it sandblasted to remove old dirt and grime. the natural wood adds lots of warmth to the space.

A couple of weeks ago, SBaird Design was contacted by a writer from HGTV online. The writer, Colleen, had seen images of some of our work through Houzz and then on our website. After a bit of back in forth and a culling of images and projects, one image of Shannon’s former home + design project in West Linn caught their eye. SBaird Design and Shannon’s hard work to lovingly restore a Mid Century classic is included in an article about successful room dividers. Check out #17!

When a new client, a young family, contacted us to help with their home design in Lake Oswego, we could not have been more thrilled. SBaird Design had previously done a color consult for this home. This past year, they asked SBaird Deisgn to develop the style of the home, beginning with the living room. It has been a fun process with lots of big decisions. One of those decisions was what would ground the space? Wanting to have their own style and look, the couple did not have any family furniture or inherited pieces they wanted to incorporate. This presented itself as a great opportunity to address both how to ground the space and how to choose a piece that will survive the test of generations:
Create a new family heirloom.
That phrase “family heirloom”, quite frequently generates images of ornate Chinese vases and victorian chintz. A grandma’s collectible plate collection or a massive sleigh bed. All items that are lovely in their own right, but not quite what most modern, young families envision surviving the test of active children, pets and a busy lifestyle. What did SBaird Design think would be the new family heirloom? A new, modern, quality rug.
Not all well made rugs are vintage. While lots of carpet mills today churn-out polypropaline/acrylic/olefin garbage there are a few companies that still aim for the handmade, naturally dyed, high quality pieces that will survive generations. We are lucky enough to live in Portland where one of those companies have a showroom. Atelier Lapchi
Atelier Lapchi is a unique company. They deal in new handmade, carpets. Their slogan is “Modern Carpet Culture”. These are modern designs, fashioned in traditional practices resulting in gorgeous, contemporary pieces of practical art. Having worked with Lapchi over the years, SBaird Design has developed a stong realtionship with their design consultant, Meg Coulter. Meg is a gem. She is a firecracker. She will bend over backwards to make the client + the designer happy. When picking rugs for our client, she opened her showroom for us to stop in and select 4 options to have delivered to the client’s home. We set a date for delivery and spent a lovely afternoon trying out each rug in the home, staging it with the furniture. At the end of the appointment we all had decided on THE ONE. Checking in months later our client is still happy with their pick. We have even been told its is great for lounging-on in front of the fire.
2 rugs have been staged in the room and a 3rd is brought in for all of us to take a look at.
